M2015 Jaar van de Mijnen (Year of the Mines)

Theo Verbey’s newest orchestral work, Lumen ad Finem Cuniculi was commissioned by the Year of the Mines 2015 and philharmonie zuidnederland. The world premiere will take place on 22 October 2015 in Theater Heerlen, under the direction of Dmitri Liss. It was fifty years ago that the coal industry in the Dutch mining region of South Limburg (the regions of Parkstad Limburg and Sittard-Geleen) came to an end. Granting this new orchestral commission to composer Theo Verbey is just one of the ways the Year of the Mines 2015 pays tribute while also looking forward. Verbey has written an optimistic work whose Latin title means: Light at the End of the Tunnel. Three concerts have been planned, in the Dutch cities of Heerlen, Maastricht and Eindhoven. New chief conductor Philharmonie zuidnederland (South Netherlands Philharmonic) will also be presenting their new chief conductor, the Russian Dimitr Liss, during this series of concerts. His three-year appointment begins with the 2016-2017 season. With this programme, Liss sets the tone for the artistic path he hopes to follow during his tenure with the orchestra: paying more attention to Dutch music and strengthening regional ties.
