Theo Verbey was commissioned to write his “Five Pieces for Violoncello Solo” for the Amsterdam Cello Biënnale in 2006. A different aspect of cello playing is showcased in each of the five movements of this work. Verbey has a special fondness for the cello: he even took lessons on the instrument while a student at the conservatory.
