The Brodsky Quartet’s newly commissioned song cycle Trees, Walls, Cities, was conceived as a modern-day Winterreise. This journey however was inspired by cities which have at their center, walls and trees. The song cycle is comprised of eight songs, each from an appropriate city. The journey takes us to Derry, London, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Dubrovnik, Nicosia and Jerusalem. It is this rather hopeful notion that nature will win out in the end which inspired the creation of the work. No matter how intimidating the wall, a mere tree will grow under and over it, eventually taking it down.
