In 1984, Dutch composer Theo Verbey (1959-) approached Alban Berg’s Sonata opus 1 under premises closely resembling Schönberg’s approach to Brahms Piano quintet in his day. Verbey uses the same instrumentation found in Webern’s Passacaglia op.1, including such instrumental effects as ponticello and the use of mutes for the brass section.
