The four movements of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 display a wide variety of characters, in a constant chiaroscuro. Patricia Kopatchinskaja’s sense of theatricality, invited for the first time by the Orchestre national du Capitole, makes her the ideal interpreter of this masterly work dedicated to the immense David Oïstrakh. The Sonata no. 1 (originally for piano, but here in an orchestration by Theo Verbey) and Transfigured Night show the face of the young Berg and Schoenberg, still turned towards Romanticism and a certain lyricism, before these composers revolutionized twentieth-century music with a radically new style.
